Hong Kong international school applications for 2027 should begin well before the intended start date because each school sets its own deadline, documents, assessment and admissions priority. This Hong Kong international school application 2027 guide explains how to shortlist schools, prepare documents, meet deadlines and manage assessments, fees, wait pools and enrolment. Families should check the child’s year group and confirm whether the school uses fixed or rolling admissions.
Start with the child’s entry year, curriculum, language needs and likely address. Parents comparing Hong Kong international school admissions should check age rules, the application opening date, documents, assessment format, fee structure and places before paying an application fee. This is the first step in an international school application in Hong Kong.
The Hong Kong Education Bureau explains that international schools and some private independent schools may begin their academic year in August, January or April. Some open applications about a year before entry. Others accept applications throughout the year or in several stages. The current school-specific admission procedures also show why families need to contact each admissions office directly. Schools may use assessments, interviews, sibling priority, staff priority, nationality criteria, debentures, nomination rights or capital-levy arrangements.
A typical application has eight stages:
This sequence is a planning framework. The school’s current admissions policy controls the actual process.
For August 2027, Hong Kong international school deadlines fall in September or October 2026. Several published deadlines are listed below. Hong Kong International School lists 1 October 2026 for Primary School Reception 1 to Grade 5 and 1 November 2026 for Grades 6 to 12. Harrow International School Hong Kong lists 10 October 2026 for Nursery through Year 10 and Sixth Form. The 2027 application deadlines and required checklist also show that an application is incomplete until the fee, Family Questionnaire and required documents have been received.
The English Schools Foundation treats applications received after 30 September 2026 as late for Year 1 and Year 7 admission in August 2027. For an ESF application 2027, families should use the Year 1 and Year 7 application period as an ESF-specific date. This deadline does not apply to every Hong Kong school. A Hong Kong international school Year 1 application and a Hong Kong international school Year 7 application may follow different priorities and waitlist treatment.
Other schools use different systems. Kellett accepts applications throughout the year and describes its waitlists as fluid. Harrow publishes an August 2027 entry timeline with a common deadline of 10 October 2026. GSIS sets out a year-round application and assessment policy, but assessment invitations depend on priority, capacity and year group. CDNIS publishes grade-specific deadlines and assessment periods, with earlier windows for younger applicants.
Use this Hong Kong international school application timeline to plan the year before entry:
Prepare the Hong Kong international school documents before opening an admissions portal. Schools commonly ask for a birth certificate or passport, a recent photograph, current and previous school reports, and teacher recommendations. Older students may also need transcripts, a parent questionnaire, and proof of Hong Kong residency or authorised status.
CDNIS provides a useful example of a supporting document checklist. Its current application page lists birth certificates, passports, Hong Kong visas or identity cards where applicable, photographs, school reports, transcripts for older applicants and a Student Reference Form. It also states that incomplete applications will not be processed.
Translate reports when required. Keep each file legible and use the child’s full legal name across passports, reports, forms and payment records.
Ask how to submit learning-support, therapy or counselling reports. Use the school’s secure portal or official admissions address, never an unverified messaging account.
A Hong Kong international school assessment varies by age and school. Early Years applicants may complete play-based activities that observe communication, motor development, social interaction and readiness. Older students may complete English and Mathematics tests, reading or writing tasks, computer-adaptive assessments, group activities and a Hong Kong international school interview.
HKIS lists different assessments for Reception, Grades 1 and 2, and Grades 3 to 12. CDNIS publishes a similar age-based structure. Overseas applicants may complete an online interview or video assessment when an on-site assessment is not practical. GSIS explains that its English International Stream uses written tests, verbal English assessment, CAT4 in selected year groups and a confidential recommendation from the current school.
Prepare the child for the format, not a memorised performance. Explain the setting and length, then practise ordinary reading, writing, number work, conversation and asking for help. Do not hide the child’s real language level or learning needs.
Parents should ask whether the assessment is diagnostic, selective or both. They should also ask whether the school can assess a child who is overseas, uses another curriculum, has English as an additional language or needs reasonable adjustments. The assessment may show whether the child meets the school’s entry expectations, but it does not guarantee a place.
A complete application does not guarantee an assessment or a place. Hong Kong international school waitlists may operate as wait pools, and schools may have fewer seats than applicants in a year group.
The rolling application and fluid waitlist policy at Kellett illustrates one model. HKIS uses a wait pool and an admissions priority system. GSIS publishes priorities that can include nationality, siblings, staff, alumni, debenture status and the date an application was received. CDNIS states that accepted applicants may enter a wait pool when a grade is full and that the application does not automatically carry over to a later academic year.
Ask the admissions office five questions before assuming that a waitlist will lead to a place:
Budget Hong Kong international school fees alongside the cost of applying. Common charges include application fees, assessment fees, registration fees, reservation deposits, tuition, capital levies, debentures, transport, meals, uniforms, examinations and activities. Ask whether a Hong Kong school debenture or a Hong Kong capital levy school arrangement applies. Fees may be non-refundable even when the school does not offer an assessment or place. Read every payment condition before transferring money.
A child may be able to submit an application before the family has completed its move, but the child may need authorised Hong Kong residency before starting school. The exact rule depends on the school and the family’s immigration route. Families applying from overseas to a Hong Kong international school should ask when residency evidence is needed.
CDNIS states that students must hold a valid Hong Kong identity card or passport with authorised residency status before attending and that a visitor visa does not entitle a child to attend school. GSIS similarly says that proof of authorised residency is requested when a place is offered. The school does not require it at the application stage. Use the residency documents for school entry to check the immigration route, then confirm the school’s own requirement before paying an enrolment deposit.
Residency can also affect the start date, sponsor documents and timing of a dependent application. Parents checking Hong Kong international school visa requirements should confirm the route with Immigration Department and the school. Keep the admissions team informed if the family’s visa, address or expected arrival date changes. Do not assume that an application, offer or school tour creates permission to study in Hong Kong.
Use the table to build a shortlist, not to rank schools. The figures below are current Doris directory references checked for this guide. They are not guaranteed 2027/28 Hong Kong international school fees, places or admissions outcomes.

Different entry ages, curricula and locations change the questions parents should ask. Check the school’s current admissions page for availability, assessment, fees, transport, levies and support before applying.
Read the offer before paying. Check conditions, residency evidence, response deadlines and whether the securing payment is refundable or credited against tuition.
Request written terms for tuition, deposits, levies, debentures, transport, uniforms and withdrawal notice. Keep the offer, receipts and correspondence together.
Submit residency evidence, medical forms and emergency contacts. Confirm transport, orientation, uniform, devices and support meetings. If you decline, ask whether a later application is required.
Begin research at least one year before entry. For August 2027, current published examples include ESF late treatment after 30 September 2026, HKIS deadlines on 1 October and 1 November 2026, and Harrow’s 10 October 2026 deadline. Other schools use rolling applications, so check each school’s current dates.
Applications usually need identity and birth documents, photographs and school reports. Some also require transcripts, references, questionnaires, visa evidence or support reports. Upload complete files and translate documents when required.
Some schools offer online interviews for overseas applicants, while others require on-site assessment. CDNIS publishes different formats by grade and residence. Ask before paying the application fee.
The school may place an eligible child in a wait pool, apply a priority system or ask the family to reapply for a later year. Ask whether the application remains active, how places are allocated and whether a new fee is required.
Do not assume so. Some schools state that a visitor visa does not entitle a child to attend, and the family may need authorised residency before the start date. Confirm the child’s immigration route with the school and the Hong Kong Immigration Department.
